This shows that when given the general choice, men and women both prefer traditional dating, though women prefer it more than men. Similarly, when men and women stated they were specifically looking for a long-term partner, both would rather date than hook up. The science here suggests that the perception that college students would rather hook-up is simply wrong. As part of the same study, researchers asked college students about the types of relationships they were actually having, hook-ups or first dates.
How Dating Has Changed Through History
Hooking up or dating: Who benefits? -- ScienceDaily
As hooking up takes over from dating as a means of heterosexual interaction on university campuses, more women than men continue to prefer dating whereas more men than women rate hooking up above dating. Both genders however perceive similar benefits and risks to dating and hooking up. Carolyn Bradshaw from James Madison University in Virginia, US, and colleagues explored the reasons that motivate college men and women to hook up or to date, as well as the perceived relative benefits and costs of the two practices. They know each other or want to get to know one another and there is the prospect of a future relationship. In contrast, a hook up is a casual sexual encounter, which usually occurs between people who are strangers or brief acquaintances. For instance, two people meet at a party where they have been drinking; they flirt and engage in sexual behaviors from kissing to sexual intercourse, with no commitment to a future relationship. They asked the students the extent to which they would prefer dating or hooking up in each situation.
The real difference between casual sex and hooking up
Relationship scientists define casual dating as dating and sexual behavior outside of a long-term romantic relationship, and describe it as a common relationship strategy among teenagers and young adults. In other words, casual dating is dating someone and possibly having sex with them when you are not engaged, married, or otherwise in a long-term commitment. Casual dating is not the same as hooking up, even though they have many things in common. Casual dating implies a desire to maintain a relationship, even though it is deemed casual.
It can be near impossible to know what to call the person you're "seeing" read: sleeping with but not really "dating" read: attending family functions with. Are they your boo? Your date?
