It's nothing if not strange to be reviewing the same thing for the second time in a fortnight, but then Rockstar has sent us down strange roads before. The Ballad of Gay Tony is the same now as it was last week , but the fact that it is also available on a disc it shares with The Lost and Damned , and which doesn't require the original Grand Theft Auto IV to play, asks different questions of a review. It's possible, for example, that you're considering whether to buy this having never bought or played GTAIV - in which case your impressions may be mixed. The Liberty City of the current generation is a vast, colourful and varied environment, brimming with the series' trademark satirical humour and eccentricity, but whereas 18 months ago it seemed a technical marvel, 18 months on it's merely at the handsome end of competent, and drops frames more noticeably than an epileptic optometrist. And the core of GTA is very much still going to icons on the mini-map to receive a briefing and then driving somewhere to do some shooting, or similar.

GTA IV Episodes
It is the fourth expansion pack in the Grand Theft Auto series , and the fourteenth installment overall. The game was released individually for the Xbox on 29 October , and for the PlayStation 3 and Microsoft Windows on 13 April , as part of a standalone disc-based package titled Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City , which also contains Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned and does not require the base game to be played. The main storyline of the episode focuses on Luis's efforts to help Tony overcome various problems, including drugs, debts, disputes with Mafia crime families , and attempts on both of their lives. The game received largely positive reviews from critics and is retrospectively considered to be among the best downloadable content packs on record. A notable addition, previously introduced in Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars , is a scoring system for missions.
Each episode puts players in the shoes of two very different characters, the only common trait both share being that they are natives of Liberty City, rather than immigrants, as was Nico Bellic in the original game. The scope of the GTA games is still impressive visually, though draw-in and pop-up can still occasionally plague the games from time to time, as well as some occasional, noticeable drops in the frame rate. GTA IV was never the prettiest looking game in the industry, but it always had size going for it, and that still holds true here. Just Cause 2 may have recently toppled it for sheer size of real estate, but the wealth of detail seen in the streets of Liberty City is still impressive, with dynamic weather, trash drifting in the wind, and the constant humour of the street signs and other subversive elements weaved throughout the setting.
