What had been thought of as celebratory events, though, are now being reconceived as the realization sets in that the landmark advance has been overshadowed by the mass shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Fla. The parades close out Pride month but kick off a busy calendar of events with lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender themes that are intimate enough, even with added security in place, to balance fellowship with fun. Several communities of color celebrate Pride with their own events over the summer. Look through any gay magazine, and the pages will be filled with a certain kind of body — built, hairless, young, usually white — that, like it or not, has been in vogue since gay men have been, well, gay. Events include pool parties, dances, a cruise, various contests involving large amounts of body hair and, of course, late-night slices at Twisted Pizza, Subs and Ice Cream.

Atlanta Black Pride has come and gone at least until next year , but the messages that were emphasized will hopefully continue to have a positive impact on attendees. One movement is hoping that social media and other Pride festivals will help to empower and educate gay men who are living with HIV. Moore said he remembers growing up and being told that HIV was a death sentence, but says his parents have been more than supportive after finding out about his diagnoses. In addition to talking about HIV with family members, on dates and during seminars on his college campus, Moore has been traveling around the country to give speeches and participate in educational programs. Moore said he hopes the "Positively Fearless" movement will be prominent at future Black Pride festivals throughout the country and that through using the PositivelyFearless hashtag and HIVWisdom Twitter handle, they can keep the conversation going.
